Animal Inside Out exhibition at the Life Science Centre!

On Thursday we visited the Life Science Centre at Newcastle to see the Animal Inside Out exhibition....We had seen it advertised on TV in the run up to us going so we were rather intrigued....

Thanks to the science of plastination invented by Dr Gunther von Hagens each animal has been painstakingly preserved allowing visitors to see what lies beneath nature’s skin in intricate detail....

The exhibition aims to illustrate the complexity of animal physiology, exploring the inner workings of animals and the systems that allow them to live, thrive and survive. You’ll see the nervous, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems and be able to compare and contrast them to the human equivalent.

Animal Inside Out was made possible through cooperation with zoos and various university veterinary programmes. No animal was killed or harmed for this exhibition.

We arrived just after 11am and the Life Centre was already busy but the queue to get in moved quickly and we were in within a couple of minutes....We hired a locker for a £5 deposit so we could take our coats off. When you return the key you get £4 back so it was a good deal....

We headed straight for the Animal Inside Out exhibition....We walked into the area and were absolutely amazed....I imagined the girls to be a little grossed out by it but they found it fascinating!! It really was amazing....Throughout the exhibition we saw the nervous, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems of animals big and small and humans.

As we walked into the last room in the exhibition our breath was taken away. There was a life sized giraffe and elephant....

You would think seeing animals without their skins would be disgusting and stomach churning but it really wasn't.....I think the exhibition is so educational and interesting....I really cannot express in words how amazing it actually was.

It says the exhibition is suitable for children 8 and up but this is not a set rule. You know your child and I saw children looking at the animals who were younger than 8 and they didn't look upset or daunted.

After we went around the exhibition we were feeling rather hungry....So we went to find something to eat. Times Square Cafe is at the front of the Centre and serves lighter meals such as sandwiches, pastrys and cakes but we had seen the Life Cafe which serves hot or cold meals...

It was absolutely heaving but there was plenty of seats and queues were practically none existent....Stu and I got sausage, chips and beans and the kids had set their heart on a packed lunch. Any 5 items such as sandwiches, cheese, fruit, youghurts, drinks and crisps for £4.

The food was delicious and it was nice to have sit down. For it being so busy everywhere was clean and tidy which was great to see....

When we had finished lunch we went to explore the rest of the Life Science Centre which I will blog about later in the week as there is so much more to it than the Animal Inside Out exhibition.

The Animal Inside Out exhibition runs until the 3rd of January so you have plenty of time to visit.

All areas of the Science Centre including major exhibitions, the planetarium, 4D Motion Ride and Science Theatre are included in the price of your ticket....Prices vary depending on how you are paying but a Family ticket (1 adult + 3 children OR 2 adults + 2 children) is £34.00 and children under 4 are free. I think it well worth the price! We were in the Life Science Centre for about 4 hours....

If you want to visit the Life Science Centre is open Monday to Saturday 10:00am until 6:00pm and Sunday 11:00am until 6:00pm and it is just a two minute walk from Newcastle Central train station....

We were given a complimentary family ticket and a gift voucher to use in the cafe so we could review the Life Science Centre....All thoughts and opinions are our own!
