Trying out Fruitypot and JellySqueeze pouches....

In a few weeks the kids will be going back to school and it is a great time to discover new snacks and treats which are perfect for packed lunch boxes.....

Fruitypot offer a selection of innovative, healthy fruit based products which are a great alternative to sweets, chocolate or crisps and easy to eat on the go. Ideal for a packed lunch, or just as a refreshing snack.

Fruitypot are a range of single serve pots of fruit in jelly and juice. Packaged in a convenient pot with a spoon, perfect for on the go!

They are available in 6 ready to eat flavours and options between fruit in juice and fruit in jelly. Pineapple, Peach And Pear and Mandarin in fruit juice and Peach in peach jelly, Tropical in pineapple jelly and Mandarin in jelly....

These are so handy and are more fun than just normal plain fruit....My girls loved them. They preferred the fruit in jelly over the fruit in fruit juice...They have both already asked for more which is a good sign....

These are made with real fruit juice, they contains no artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and no artificial colours. They are also vegan, lactose free and gluten free...

We were also sent some JellySqueeze to try.....These are a convenient pocket-sized pouch packed with a burst of flavour.

The ready to eat treat enables you to enjoy a hydrating jelly on-the-go. Made with fruit juice and set with natural setting agents, these resealable pouches are also suitable for vegetarians, vegans as well as being gluten free. The two fruity flavours have no added sugar or artificial sweeteners.

The kids were really drawn to these and thought they were great....With the resealable lid they are ideal for days out and packed lunches....I like that they are mess free.

They are schools compliant and you can buy them in Co-op, Booths and Nisa stores and on Ocado and Amazon.

We were sent these free of charge in exchange for this blog post....

A week of the Unexpected. #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is......

I struggled picking a word for this past week....It has been a bit of an odd one....I could have picked excitement with it being Stu's birthday but that didn't sit right with what went on mid week near me....I could have picked busy but then there has been a couple of days where we have done nothing at all apart from watch TV and be lazy. I have decided to go with unexpected.....

The weekend seems such a long time ago. I have had to look back on my Instagram photos to see what we got up to....lol As soon as I looked I thought Oh, yeah! The highlight of my weekend was watching Casualty! lol I love that TV show and have since I was young. The person who I thought was going to die/be majorly injured didn't, it was someone else. I won't say in case someone hasn't seen it yet. It was very unexpected.

On Wednesday we had a lie in and when we got up we heard the police helicopter which is nothing new considering where I live.....It was only when I went to open the back gate (I was expecting a parcel) that I thought something was going on. As I went to open the gate a couple of men ran past then I heard shouting.....I hesitated in opening the gate. Running men and the police helicopter overhead set my "spidey sense" off.....After a couple of minutes I was brave enough to open the gate and peek out.....At the end of our street there was police cars, vans and police people with guns.

Whatever was going on was serious! I locked the gate, came in and locked the doors and got straight on Facebook. The rumors were that the post office a couple of streets away had been robbed....Our friendly postman knocked and dropped a parcel off & I asked what was going on and he confirmed that there was an armed robbery, 2 men with guns had robbed the post office and were loose somewhere nearby. All the streets nearby were blocked off and even he said to stay indoors.....Thankfully no one in the post office was hurt....They were just shaken. The police arrested people later in the day and it was all over.....

It was Stu's birthday on Thursday and he had already had his present earlier in the week. He plays the online game World of Warcraft and there was a new expansion released and I bought him that for his birthday....What he wasn't expecting was the other few presents I got him. I got him a big cup, a couple of t-shirts and a screwdriver set which he was very happy with....

9 years since their heart surgeries. #CHD

Today is 9 years since my girls and I went into hospital so they could both have open heart surgery to repair the holes they have in their hearts. You can read our story here. It's something I like to blog about every year as it is important for us and it raises a bit of awareness about heart defects....

The short story is: One night the kids were messing about in their bedrooms and Becky shut the doors on Ellie's fingers....While getting her fingers fixed they realised Ellie had a problem with her heart and it was found she had a Atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) (A hole in her heart) Becky showed the same symptoms so we got her checked out. Becky had the exact same defect on her heart as Ellie. We travelled to the hospital on the 16th of August. Becky had open heart surgery on the 17th of August and Ellie had her's on the 18th.

Since the last anniversary the girls have been back to the hospital for a check up which was pretty routine....

We didn't see the usual doctor we normally see and this one was more blunt and upfront about where we stood with the girls hearts...He said the girls hearts haven't changed since the last check up but did say that with the leaking valves they will need surgery in the future as the leaking valves will cause the heart to swell which is not good. Ellie's is leaking a little more than Becky's and will need surgery sooner but not for a good few years yet, so I am not going to worry about it until I need to....

As I do every year in February I wrote a few blog posts for Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.....Even after 9 years since heart surgery and nearly 6 years of blogging I always have something to say on the subject.....

I wrote about The Facts of Congenital Heart Defect's, I still find it shocking that CHD's are the most common birth defect's in the UK and that CHD’s are the number one cause of death from a birth defect killing twice as many children as cancer every year!

I wrote about The reality of heart surgery. It was a bit of a bit of a mind dump where I explained how I was feeling when my girls got diagnosed and stayed in hospital....

I wrote Where to find help & support when your child has a heart defect. Google is not the answer....When you Google things you always find the worse case scenario!

I wrote about How having a CHD effects my girls lives....You would never guess they had heart problems if you met them but there is signs there....

My girls are fit and well at the moment and we rarely think about their heart problems which is a good thing but it is always in the back of my mind.....Here's to hopefully another nine years without needing any surgery!

Snacking with HIPPEAS Organic Chickpea Puffs. #GivePeasAChance

Ellie has decided that when school starts again she will be having a packed lunch at least a couple of times a week....She is not keen on the hustle and bustle of the dining hall and has realised if she takes a packed lunch she can eat it anywhere....I think in her head she will be having cakes, sweets and unhealthy snacks but she is coming around to the idea that there are snacks out there which are healthy and taste good too!

One of these is the HIPPEAS Organic Chickpea Puffs which we have been trying recently!

The UK’s fastest growing free-from snack, HIPPEAS are both nutritious and delicious and ideal for parents and children alike for packed lunches and after school snacks....

In line with Public Health England’s recent recommendations for children’s snacktime, HIPPEAS are under 100 calories and they are packed full of protein and fibre, making them
the ideal schooltime fuel.

HIPPEAS also contain no allergens and are free from gluten, dairy and nuts.

We were sent four of the flavours to try Sweet and Smokin’, Salt and Vinegar Vibes, Chilli Haze and Cheese and Love....

I was not expecting to like these as much as I did....It was a case of me fighting the kids for them....hehehe

My favourite was the Sweet and Smokin....The flavour was just right. They were more crunchier than I expected them to be but that was fine....I enjoyed eating them.

The kids shared the Cheese and Love and the Salt and Vinegar Vibes....They thought they tasted good but I did the thing salt & vinegar was a little strong but it could have just been the puff that I tried....Stu tried the Chilli Haze and he loved them....He isn't a big crisp eater but said he could see himself eating these regularly....

These were a hit with my family and I will be buying them for us all to snack on....

HIPPEAS® deliver across-the-board, ticking all the key boxes: Only 91 calories per bag, Vegan, Gluten free, Organic High in fibre,  A good source of protein and 6 tasty flavours to choose from....

These are available in single and sharing bags and you can buy them from Amazon, Asda, Boots, Coop, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose, Wholefoods and a range of independent stores...

We were sent these free of charge in exchange for this blog post....

Boosting our immunity and energy with BioCare....

Recently I was sent a lovely package containing some fab things for all of the family....There was a twisty toy thing for Ellie which she nabbed before I had chance to take a photo, some very cute lunch boxes (think Russian dolls, a box inside a box and so on, a cup, a family planner and a selection of BioCare products to try....

BioCare have a wide range of products for both adults and children to help keep immunity strong, boost energy and offer better night’s sleep which are fantastic to start taking now ready for the new school year to start....

As a family we like to take vitamins and food supplements. As much as we eat quite healthily we are not lovers of the right sort of vegetables and fish and in the colder months we do not get enough vitamin D from the sunshine.....Vitamins and food supplements are a great way to fill the gaps in our diet...

Stu has been using the NT Complex and I have been using the Methyl Multinutrient and so far so good.....

NT Complex - 60 Capsules - £25.96

NT Complex is a unique, high potency combination of L-theanine, lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, magnesium taurate and B-vitamins to support a balanced nervous system....These contain magnesium and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6 to support energy production and nervous system balance and lemon balm, lavender and chamomile support relaxation and healthy sleep....

These are not suitable for individuals taking sleeping or mood modifying medication....

Methyl Multinutrient - 60 Capsules - £30.95

Methyl Multinutrient is a superior, high potency multivitamin, mineral and antioxidant complex...

Methyl Multinutrient contains folate as methylfolate or 5-MTHF. 5-MTHF is the natural form of folate found in food such as leafy green vegetables and is already active and ready for the body to use....The B vitamins included support the circulatory and immune systems and help maintain the health of skin, hair and eyes....

Please not that there is a warning that both of these products are not suitable for use during pregnancy, planned pregnancy, or breastfeeding!!

The kids are not left out when it comes to taking vitamins....Healthy children are likely to grow into healthy adults so laying down good nutritional foundations in childhood can have lifelong benefits.....Ellie has been trying out the Children's Complete Complex (Multinutrient) and Becky has been taking the Children's Red Berry BioMelts

Children's Complete Complex is a comprehensive vitamin and mineral formula for children in a pleasant tasting, easy to use powder form.

Just skimming through the nutritional information it has all the vitamins and minerals that you would expect from something like this.

This can be used from 6 months of age and ideal for young children or those who have difficulty swallowing capsules or tablets. It easily mixes into milk, juice, yoghurt or pureed foods. Ellie has been having it her on her cereal. She did try mixing it with water but she wasn't keen. This is dairy-free and formulated with the intolerant individual in mind....

Children's Red Berry BioMelts - 28 Sachets - £17.95

The red berry BioMelts are suitable from 3 years of age and are an all in one solution of live bacteria with vitamin D for every day and immune support in one hit....

They come in powder form that you just pour straight into your mouth and they taste rather delicious. They contain no artificial flavours or colours and free from common allergens like dairy....

I know Becky does not get enough sun on her....She's more of an indoorsy person so a thing like this is great to give her a bit of a boost of vitamin D. She has been loving taking these....

I really like all of the products we were sent to try and we are going to have a great start to the new school year with all the vitamins and food supplements we've been trying....

We were sent these products free of charge to try in exchange for this blog post.

We have a fun week of food planned. #MealPlanningMonday

Last weeks meal plan went amazingly well.....We ate all but one meal. We didn't fancy the bolognese with mash on to make a cottage pie so we had it in wraps and there is a couple of portions left over which have been put in the freezer! Hooray!

I improvised with the Tomato Ketchup Chicken Skewers and we had the chicken without the skewers....I have lost the pack of skewers I had. I do have a feeling Ellie has taken them because she was asking for some to play with outside a couple of weeks ago. Of course she is denying it & I've looked outside and can't see them. It's a mystery.

I have a feeling this week is going to be a fun one....It's Stu's birthday and we are planning to bake him a cake instead of buying one and have a day out planned too!

This week on the menu we have:

A takeaway - We always have one when it's my fella's birthday and he gets to choose. I am hoping for burgers from the pizza shop....

We are having a day out so will probably have McDonalds for lunch then have just something we pick up on the way home, like Greggs sausage rolls which is a favourite of ours.

Battered sausages, chips and beans. I found the sausages again in Heron Foods

Prawn cocktail salad with tomato garlic bread....

Baked Bean Curry - We have not had this in so long. I originally found the recipe on Netmums and adapted it a bit.

Chicken & bacon pies, mash & veg - We're bound to have at least one cold, rainy day so we'll want something hearty & warming....

Pizza....

What are you eating this week?

I am joining in with the linky hosted by The Organised Life Project and Katykicker. They love to meal plan too!

Hugs from a non-huggy person. #MySundayPhoto

Ellie is not one for giving hugs....To get one from her you really have to have deserved it or she has to be in a happier than happy mood.....Becky my teen, Ellie's sister was honoured with a hug while we had an afternoon out earlier in the week....There was no reason for it so I guess she was in the happiest of moods....

Baking, selfies and socks! Week 32 - #Project365

This past week has flown over.....I lost track of what day it actually was mid-week. The joys of the summer holidays.

Now for a photo every day....

216/365 - 4th August.
We baked....I made a corned beef, potato & onion pie and Ellie made cakes and biscuits.

217/365 - 5th August.
Stu made tea and did a great job! Battered chicken, rice, mushrooms and peppers covered in curry sauce. Yum!

218/365 - 6th August.
Selfie! We had an afternoon out and I took so many photos.

219/365 - 7th August.
We have been trying some BioCare vitamin and supplements. There will be a blog post next week about them.

220/365 - 8th August.
My teen paired all the socks to earn more time on her laptop....There was a lot of socks. hehehe It's a job we always put off.

221/365 - 9th August.
Ellie is such a cutie but hates being called that. She said she is too old to be cute. Hmmf!

222/365 - 10th August.
We were sent a lovely package of Hippeas chickpea puff snacks to try out...."Give peas a chance" really made me chuckle.

The Thermos Floral Upright Lunch Bag - Review! #BackToSchool

Ellie does love a packed lunch....While she was at primary school she had the school lunches but in September she has said that a couple of days a week she would like to take a packed lunch....I was contacted at just the right time about reviewing a Thermos Floral Upright Lunch Bag which will be ideal!

Made to last all year, these lunch kits boast closed cell insulation and have PVC free, food-safe linings. Spacious and perfect for sandwiches, snacks and a drink, each lunch kid also comes with a 10g ice pack for extended cooling, meaning no more soggy sandwiches and soft fruit. Each lunch kit has a padded handle for easy carrying, and is BPA Free.

This is a good sized lunch bag. Big enough to fit Ellie's lunch in and small enough to fit into her school bag if need be. The bag seems strong and I can believe it will last the whole school year.....It is easy to wipe down after being used and the handle makes it comfortable to carry....Ellie really loves the design it is pink and girly just how she likes things but not to babyish for senior school....

This lunch bag costs £10.95 and I think it is a fair price....

As well as the lunch bag you can buy matching drink bottles and food flask too from Official UK Thermos Shop....

We were sent the lunch bag free of charge in exchange for this blog post.

My girls are growing up fast and this past week has proved it. #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is:

In previous years during the summer holidays I have planned things to do and the kids have loved it, we even made a summer bucket list full of fun things to do over this summer but this year seems different.

I have seen the thing on Facebook which says you only get 18 summers together with our kids but what about when they are older and are off doing their own things. My girls are nearly 16 and 11 and they are wanting to do less and less with me. I suggested doing some crafts with Ellie and she said she couldn't because she was going out to play with her friends...Hmmf! I am happy that the kids have been finding their own things to do but it does sting a little that I am not needed so much.....

When Ellie was baking some cakes I was allowed to watch but I wasn't allowed to help and earlier in the week the kids made a trifle for after tea and I was shooed out of the kitchen because they didn't need my help....

This isn't a pity party it's just part of life....I am sure my mother felt the same when I was my girls age....It is natural that our children will become more independent and need us less...It just comes around so quickly!

Becky had her hair dyed last week and over the weekend Ellie decided she wanted her hair the same.....I had to lighten it and that is as far as we got because Ellie liked the blonde...lol It's the first real time that Ellie has chosen her own hairstyle and it's another part of growing up....

I did put my foot down on Monday and said we were having an afternoon out. I made a picnic and we were going to go on an adventure then it rained.....It absolutely chucked it down which meant the picnic wasn't going to work. We ate the sandwiches in the house and when the rain had stopped we did go out and had a great afternoon walking around a lake near us.

My great Aunt rang yesterday and said she was sorting out Christmas presents and she always gets the girls a couple of new sets of PJ's. She was asking what sizes they wanted and she couldn't believe that Becky was in adult sizes. She see's her maybe once or twice a year so doesn't see how much she has grown....

As I write this Ellie is out playing with her friends...She's only a couple of streets away but I am starting to trust that she will be OK. It was only this time last year when she first played out with her friend and I worried so much.

My girls are growing up fast and this past week has proved it....

A walk around the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park. #CountryKids

On Monday we decided we would have a day out....Stu was on an early shift & finished work at lunchtime so it gave the girls and me chance to have a lazy morning and make a picnic. We were going to go to Queen Elizabeth II Country Park for a picnic and a walk around the lake....

The picnic didn't happen! As soon as we were ready to leave it started chucking it down and it didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon....Thankfully by about 2pm it did and we decided just to go for that walk!

The country park once the site of a colliery spoil heap features a wide variety of wildlife in its woodland and 40-acre lake.....

It is located on the north edge of Ashington, between the A197 and the A189 with the main car park off the A189.

We have lived in Ashington for years and I can't believe we have never visited before.....The closest we have came is at the Brewers Fayre at the other side of the lake from us. When we go there we usually get a taxi....

From our house it is a 10 minute walk.....It is amazing that you hear the buzz of traffic and as soon as you cross the railway line into the park you hear nothing but nature....

Taking the scooter was a mistake and we ended up carrying it for most of the afternoon....Well Stu did!

We saw so much that nature had to offer us....Plants, trees, berries, bees, swans, pine cones and dragonflies which were huge and were flying around....Eek!

The girls had a great adventure....Shortly after getting near the lake Ellie found a big stick that she carried all around the lake....It was her magical staff which actually turned her quite feral. lol With a stick she was happy with a feather in it she got more adventurous and brave. It was fantastic to see!

We also found time to take some proper family photos and managed to get one with all 4 of us which rarely happens! It's not the best but it will be one which will be treasured! Monkey of course was with us too....Ellie refused to leave him at home. lol

We walked right around the lake which was a good few miles. I am not usually one for walking but we had great fun. There was no pressure about having to be out at a certain time, there was no playground so Ellie wasn't rushing to get there then not wanting to leave. There may have been a slight argument when we passed Brewers Fayre and Ellie decided she was hungry (she wasn't) and couldn't walk because she was starving. A piggy bag off Stu for 5 minutes fixed her legs and she was happy again....It was a great afternoon out!

The Childhood Tag....

I saw this over on Freddies Mummy absolutely ages ago.....I do love a tag and it has been a while since I did one so here we go....

1. What were you not expecting/not prepared for before becoming a parent?
I did not have a clue to how much worrying I would do....When my girls were babies and were sleeping I would check all the time if they were still breathing, as a toddler were they speaking and walking quickly enough and now, are they eating enough sleeping enough, are they doing OK at school, am I being a good enough parent? Then there is everything inbetween.

2. What is your main piece of advice for new parents?
Go with your gut instinct....Yes read the books and take advice from others but do what you feel is right for you and your family...

3. How do you encourage family time at home?
We have plenty of family time over the weekend when the kids are at school....Electronics get switched off. Usually on a Saturday and Sunday morning and we do things together....

4. How do you balance being a blogger with parental duties?
My girls are 10 & 15 so I blog while the kids are at school and when they are home I dip in and out of social media...

5. What was your favourite toy growing up?
I loved my barbie dolls....I had tons of them and bags of clothes.

6. Have you kept any of your toys from childhood?
No. My mother threw them all out when I left home. She wasn't a sentimental person and thought nothing of it.

7. What are your children’s favourite toys?
My teen loves her tablet and laptop and my youngest loves all of her dolls and of course Monkey.

8. Do you actively limit the amount of screen time your kids have?
I try to. During term time they have 2 hours per day on their laptops/tablets and during the school holidays they have 3 hours. They can earn extra time by doing jobs. Ellie is good at rationing her time, Becky not so much. She is always asking for jobs....hehehe

9. How do you reduce plastic waste in your home? – Reusable bottles, buying wooden toys, avoiding excessive food packaging, etc.?
I am not great at this. We do recycle...I am obsessive about making sure everything is in the right bin and I have stopped the girls buying bottled water at school. They use reusable bottles now....

10. What advice would you give to parents who want to start blogging?
Do it! It is hard work, more than it looks but it is worth it.....I have made some wonderful friends through blogging and I have learned so much....

If you want to do this tag, go ahead. Feel free to copy the questions....
