Jacqueline Wilson’s 100th Book - Opal Plumstead - Review!!

In the early 90's when I was about Becky's age I remember reading The Story of Tracy Beaker....That was my first introduction to the author Jacqueline Wilson....Becky has read quite a few of her books and now her 100th book Opal Plumstead has been released....

Opal Plumstead might be plain, but she has always been fiercely intelligent. Yet her scholarship and dreams of university are snatched away when her father is sent to prison, and fourteen-year-old Opal must start work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory to support her family.

Opal struggles to get along with the other workers, who think her snobby and stuck-up. But Opal idolises Mrs Roberts, the factory’s beautiful, dignified owner, who introduces Opal to the legendary Mrs Pankhurst and her fellow Suffragettes. And when Opal meets Morgan – Mrs Roberts’ handsome son, and the heir to Fairy Glen – she believes she has found her soulmate. But the First World War is about to begin, and will change Opal’s life for ever.

Becky has read it from cover to cover....If she doesn't like a book after the first few pages she will put it down and not pick it up again so for her to read it all means she really enjoyed it.....

Without any spoilers....Here are Becky's thoughts....

You never know what is going to happen....Every page you turn there is a new twist.....It is so interesting to know more about history....She could relate to Opal and how she seemed shy but would stand up for herself when she had to, just like her...It is romantic and the ending is so sad but so lovely too....

I have skimmed through this book but haven't read it fully....It looks such an easy read....Even though it is aimed at younger people and young adults I think it may be a great summer read for me too....In fact I do plan to read it over the summer....

There are many relevant issues covered in the book which youngsters of today could relate to...Bullying, family members in prison, family issues, death and romance....It is not all fun and happiness but is about how real life is/was....

Jacqueline Wilson has certainly not lost her touch.....She is still an amazing writer....

  3. My daughter was obsessed with these books 5 years ago, her favorites were the ones set in the past, a great way to introduce history to girls and to this day at the age of 15 nearly 16 she still loves history!

  17. Sounds like a good book to introduce children to that period of history. I've never read any Jacqueline Wilson and my kids are too young for her yet, but when they are they'll have a massive backlog of books to choose from. :) #readwithme

  18. My daughter loved Jacqueline Wilson's books a couple of years of ago but she seems to have gone off them now. I did record the recent Hetty Feather series on CBBC for her and we saw the stage production last year. I wonder if this will tempt her back to reading Jacqueline Wilson.
